Indianapolis has historically developed as the capital city of Indiana. Since its founding in 1821, it has been one of the few urbanistically planned cities in the United States. It is located southeast of Lake Michigan along the splendid White River.


This city is also known for holding the "Indianapolis 500" automobile race every year. However, it is art, culture and the spirit of human progress that define this great metropolis.


What to do in Indianapolis


Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument


The Indianapolis Soldiers and Sailors Memorial shows that the nation never forgets the souls of national heroes. The monument to be built to honor the combatants of the American Civil War.


Monument Circle


A visit to Monument Circle is a must on your Indianapolis travel agenda. It is one of the most representative icons of the city, surrounded by stores and restaurants that you can explore. Here you can climb a tower of almost 90 meters and enjoy one of the best views of the city.



Central Canal


A beautiful green oasis located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, where the public can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities and find quiet places to relax.


The Central Canal runs through White River State Park, built in the early 19th century to help bring goods in and out of the city. No longer an industrial waterway, the completely updated canal is now lined with paddle boats and kayaks, giving visitors a new perspective of the downtown area; rentals can be found across the canal from the Eiteljorg Museum.




Indianapolis Motor Speedway


Indianapolis is a sports-focused Indiana location in this city. With a great on-course museum and a world-class golf course, this auto racing venue is a once-in-a-lifetime must-see in Indianapolis.




USS Indianapolis National Memorial


A monument located on the eastern edge of the Central Canal, it is a memorial to the sailors who suffered the last North American ship to sink during World War II. This black and gray granite monument was designed in the shape of a cruise ship to keep the memory alive.


Indiana War Memorial


Indiana World War Memorial Plaza is a historic landmark located in Indianapolis, initially built to honor World War I veterans.

Scottish Rite Cathedral


The most important historical monument is undoubtedly the Scottish Rite Cathedral, where today meetings, concerts and banquets are organized. The banquet hall is used for solemn and festive events, there are also classrooms for lessons and meetings.


American Legion Mall


Multiple war memorials located in a grassy park flanked by American Legion national headquarters.





When is the best time to visit Indianapolis?


To enjoy all the tourist attractions that Indianapolis has to offer, the best time to travel is between May and October. At the end of May the Indianapolis 500 race takes place and during August you can enjoy events such as the Rib America Fest.


Celebrations in Indianapolis


In late November it is interesting for children and adults to visit the world's largest Christmas tree. Be sure to attend the Circle of Lights festival downtown.


Throughout the month of May you can enjoy the 500 festival. A season where the city prepares celebrations as a prelude to the great Indy 500 race.
