Great Smoky Mountains

Its name "Smoky Mountains" comes from the effect of the fog created by the water droplets in suspension and the hydrocarbons expelled by the trees. This National Park has 11 million annual visitors. It is the most visited national park in the country ahead of the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone itself.

What to do in the Smoky Mountains in one weekend

The park covers an area of 760 square kilometers. Fortunately, the most important things to visit are concentrated in the same area of the park.

Drive part of the famous Blue Ridge Parkway

To get to the Smoky Mountains we drove part of the famous Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville. A scenic roadway that leads you to the majestic Great Smoky Mountains. This iconic drive offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and breathtaking vistas. As you venture deeper into this picturesque landscape, you'll witness the vibrant colors of the changing seasons and be treated to stunning overlooks that unveil the splendor of the surrounding valleys. The Blue Ridge Parkway not only serves as a means of transportation but as an immersive experience that sets the stage for the wonders that await you in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Spectacular Hiking Trails and Panoramic Views

Start your weekend by exploring the incredible hiking trails that wind through the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. Lace up your boots and embark on a trek to Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the park, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The distance from the parking area to the top of the structure is approximately half a mile. The climb is not very difficult, but it is not very easy either, you can rest at various points, take a breath of air and continue the climb. When we did Clingsmans Dome there was a lot of fog at the top so we couldn't see anything, but it usually has incredible views.

Wildlife Encounters and Nature Experiences

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and abundant wildlife. Spend a morning or afternoon at Cades Cove, a scenic valley known for its wildlife sightings. An 11 miles loop through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a picturesque drive with a backdrop of the mountain peaks and its lush, rolling greens. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, black bears, and wild turkeys as you drive or cycle through this picturesque landscape.

The scenic driving tour through the Cades Cove Loop takes approximately two to four hours depending on traffic. Because it’s a single-lane road, be prepared to stop frequently—the slow pace makes it easy to enjoy the amazing mountain landscapes, wildflower meadows, and diverse wildlife.

What to see at the Cades Cove?

Besides the unending views of nature, there are some historic sites. These are our favourites:

  1. Primitive Baptist Church Historical Building

  2. Cades Cove Historical Grist Mill

  3. Henry Whitehead Place Historical Structure

Insider Tips:

  • During your drive, keep an eye out for whitetail deer, coyotes, elk, fox, and black bears. Visitors often spy black bears in the late afternoon/early evening hours.

  • Don’t block the roadway. It gets extremely busy in the Cades Cove Loop at times, and everyone simply wants to enjoy the loop at their own pace. Pull over and let other cars pass to be courteous to other travelers on the loop.

  • Need to use the restroom? There are restrooms near Cable Mill and the Visitor Center as well as the Ranger Station and Camp Ground.
